CCR - Who Will Stop The Rain (Eisenstaedt Historical Photo Slideshow) HD

Alfred Eisenstaedt (December 6, 1898 -- August 24, 1995) was a German-born American photographer and photojournalist. He is best known for his photograph of the V-J Day celebration  and for his candid photographs, frequently made using a 35mm Leica camera.
Eisenstaedt was born in Dirschau (Tczew) in West Prussia, Imperial Germany in 1898. His family moved to Berlin in 1906. Eisenstaedt was fascinated by photography from his youth and began taking pictures at age 14 when he was given his first camera, an Eastman Kodak Folding Camera with roll film. Eisenstaedt served in the German Army's artillery during World War I, and was wounded in 1918. While working as a belt and button salesman in the 1920s in Weimar Germany, Eisenstaedt began taking photographs as a freelancer for the Pacific and Atlantic Photos' Berlin office in 1928. The office was taken over by Associated Press in 1931.
Eisenstaedt successfully became a full-time photographer in 1929. Four years later he photographed a meeting between Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini in Italy. Other notable, early pictures by Eisenstaedt include his depiction of a waiter at the ice rink of the Grand Hotel in St. Moritz in 1932 and Joseph Goebbels at the League of Nations in Geneva in 1933. Although initially friendly, Goebbels scowled for the photograph when he learned that Eisenstaedt was Jewish.
Because of oppression in Hitler's Nazi Germany, Eisenstaedt emigrated to the United States in 1935 where he lived in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, for the rest of his life. He worked as a staff photographer for Life magazine from 1936 to 1972. His photos of news events and celebrities, such as Dagmar, Sophia Loren and Ernest Hemingway, appeared on 90 Life covers. Eisenstaedt was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1989 by President George Bush in a ceremony on the White House lawn.
Eisenstaedt, known as "Eisie" to his close friends, enjoyed his annual August vacations on the island of Martha's Vineyard for 50 years. During these summers, he would conduct photographic experiments, working with different lenses, filters, and prisms in natural light. Eisenstaedt was fond of Martha's Vineyard's photogenic lighthouses, and was the focus of lighthouse fundraisers organized by Vineyard Environmental Research, Institute (VERI).
Eisenstaedt's last photographs were of President Bill Clinton with wife, Hillary, and daughter, Chelsea, on August 1993, at the Granary Gallery in West Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard.

Eisenstaedt died in his bed at midnight at his beloved Menemsha Inn cottage known as the "Pilot House" at age 96

Gary Wright - Dream Weaver - HD

"Dream Weaver" is a song by Gary Wright that was a hit single in the US, reaching #2 in the Billboard charts while it reached #1 in the Cash Box charts (Australia, Canada and Europe) in 1976. Taken from the album The Dream Weaver released the previous year, it features Wright on vocals and keyboards, and Jim Keltner on drums. In 1992, Gary Wright re-recorded a longer version of "Dream Weaver" for the Wayne's World movie soundtrack.

According to Gary Wright, the song was inspired by Autobiography of a Yogi, which was given to him by George Harrison. Paramhansa Yogananda's poem, God! God! God! made reference to "the idea of the mind weaving dreams." The expression "Dream Weaver" was popularized by John Lennon in 1970 in his song "God," taken from his solo album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. This song depicts Lennon's declaration that he was the dream weaver of the sixties, breaking away from the influences and dogmas that influenced his life.

"Dream Weaver" was featured in the Fox television series That '70s Show in the episode "The First Time".

Portions of "Dream Weaver" were first sampled in a short film appearing in the 1990 Wayne's World episode of Saturday Night Live, in which guest star Wayne Gretzky appears, and Wayne is picturing that song playing as he imagines himself defeating Gretzky in street hockey and then winning his wife, Janet Jones. The song would later be re-recorded for the soundtrack of the 1992 film Wayne's World.

Since then, a similar form of sampling of the song has been used to note the meeting between, or the longing of one character for another, as indicated in the 2003 movie Daddy Day Care as well as in the Pixar film Toy Story 3 when Ken first meets Barbie.

This song, and its keyboard introduction, according to Wes Craven, inspired the concept behind the film A Nightmare on Elm Street. The song has also appeared in films and television programs such as The People vs. Larry Flynt and the fifth season episode of Nip/Tuck, "Dawn Budge II"

"Dream Weaver" was also featured over the closing credits of the sixth episode of the fourth season of the classic HBO sketch comedy series "Mr. Show."

David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes - HD

"Ashes to Ashes" is a song by David Bowie, released in 1980. It made #1 in the UK and was the first cut from the Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) album, also a #1 hit. As well as its musical qualities, it is noted for its innovative video, directed by Bowie and David Mallet. The lyrics revisit Bowie's Major Tom character from 1969's "Space Oddity", which he referenced once again in 1995 with "Hallo Spaceboy".

Interviewed in 1980, Bowie described the song as "a nursery rhyme. It's very much a 1980s nursery rhyme. I think 1980s nursery rhymes will have a lot to do with the 1880s/1890s nursery rhymes which are all rather horrid and had little boys with their ears being cut off and stuff like that...". Years later, Bowie said that with "Ashes to Ashes" he was "wrapping up the seventies really for myself, and that seemed a good enough epitaph for it"

Melancholic and introspective, "Ashes to Ashes" featured Bowie's reinterpretation of "a guy that's been in such an early song", namely Major Tom from his first hit in 1969, "Space Oddity". Described as "containing more messages per second" than any single released in 1980, the song also included plaintive reflections on the singer's moral and artistic journey:

        I've never done good things
        I've never done bad things
I never did anything out of the blue

Instead of a hippie astronaut who casually slips the bonds of a crass and material world to journey beyond the stars, the song describes Major Tom as a "junkie, strung out in heaven's high, hitting an all-time low". This lyric was interpreted as a play on the title of Bowie's 1977 album Low, which charted his withdrawal inwards following his drug excesses in America a short time before, another reversal of Major Tom's original withdrawal 'outwards' or towards space.

The final lines, "My mother said, to get things done, you better not mess with Major Tom", have been compared to the verse from a nursery rhyme:

        My mother said
        That I never should
Play with the gypsies in the wood

Bowie himself said in an interview with NME shortly after the single's release, "It really is an ode to childhood, if you like, a popular nursery rhyme. It's about space men becoming junkies (laughs)."

Musically "Ashes to Ashes" was notable for its delicate synthetic string sound, counterpointed by hard-edged funk bass, and its complex vocal layering. Perhaps Bowie's most sophisticated sonic work to date, its choir-like textures were created by guitarist Chuck Hammer with four multi-tracked guitar synthesizers, each playing opposing chord inversions; this was underpinned by Bowie's dead-pan, chanted background voices.

How Did The Olympic Games Get Its Name?

Hello my dear students, greetings from Olympia! As we count down to the 2012 Summer Olympics, your favorite teacher is here to give you the info you want most. I mean, who cares who wins if you don't know what it's all about? What does "Olympic" even mean, and how did the Games get started? Lucky for you, Hot for Words is here to investigate.

[Hot for Words intro]

There's a lot of mystery and legend surrounding the origin of the games, but we know they started around 776 BC in Olympia, Greece. The most common myth is the story of prince Pelops. He was in love with Hippodamia, the daughter of King Oinomaos of Pisa.

Oinomaos challenged Pelops to a chariot race and said the winner could marry her... but whoever lost would be be-headed! Pelops fought dirty—he replaced the bronze linchpins of the King's chariot with wax, so Oinomaos was thrown to his death during the race. After Pelops married Hippodamia, he started the Olympic games to celebrate his victory (or according to another theory, they were funeral games in memory of Oinomaos.)

No matter whether you believe this myth, historians agree that the Olympics were a very spiritual event for the Ancient Greeks. Every four years, the warring city-states would put aside their differences and come together over their shared passion for sport. And, if you've watched my video about the meaning of the word "gymnasium," you'll know that ancient Greeks exercised in the nude! The first few Olympic Games must have been quite exciting indeed—perhaps that would be a good way for NBC to boost ratings!

Anyway, not everyone liked the religious aspect of the Games. Around 394 AD, King Theodosius put an end to the Olympics because he was trying to bring Christianity to the region. It wasn't until 1896 that the world revived the Games in Athens, Greece. Lucky for us, they were a huge success, and continue to be held in different cities around the world.

So where does the word "Olympic" come from? It originated around 1600, and means "of or in reference to Olympos or Olympia," the town where the Olympic Games were originally held.

The literal symbol of the Games is five interlocking rings, which represent the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world. So, as you see those rings on everything from soda cups to TV screens over the next couple months, remember peace and unity!

And stay tuned for more Hot for Words coverage of the Olympic Games—as usual, I'll bring you the etymological scoop you won't find anywhere else!
And Check out bleacher report channel for more Olympic coverage, the link is here!

For your homework, tell me what you're most excited to see at this year's games!

Historic Footage - The Pentomic Army - 1957 United States Army Educational Documentary

The 1950's were an age of streamlining, with everything from automobiles to guided missiles reflecting the dynamic look of the future. The United States Army was no exception, and with this in mind "The Big Picture" documented the new concept in this episode entitled "The Pentomic Army". As shown, the Army's modern fighting division today is lean and functional, simple in organization and efficient in performance, keeping pace with the many marvelous inventions at its disposal. The Pentomic Division, so named because it consists of five battle groups, is a semi-independent, self-contained fighting unit designed to operate effectively on an atomic battleground, should the need ever arise. As pointed out in this film presentation, today's Pentomic Division is characterized by the ability of fewer men to deliver a more devastating concentration of firepower on any would-be aggressor.

Historic Footage - Pictorial Report Number 25 - 1956 United States Army Educational Documentary

In spite of the fact that the Army had been in existence for some 181 years, during which time it had successfully defended the country in all of its wars, there existed a need for more trained engineers. These same engineers when employed by the Army become all-important citizens in America. Without engineers no nation can grow, and in this technological age no civilized nation can continue to exist without the constant efforts of highly-trained, scientifically educated men.

In this episode of the United States Army's "The Big Picture" we see a comparison of America with the Soviet Union where engineers were being trained at an enormous rate for the Russians well realize where lie the springs of power in this technological age.

For the second story in this film documentary, viewers witness the first arrival of an entire company of U.S. Army helicopters at an overseas base in an operational state. The 18th Transportation Company, composed of 21 Sikorsky H-34s, is transported to Bremerhaven, West Germany, aboard the aircraft carrier "Corrgidor." From Bremerhaven, these same helicopters fly to Oberschleissheim, a long cross-country flight. The flying windmills are capable of reaching altitudes of over 11,000 feet, and of speeds exceeding 100 knots. They are part of the new Army program which calls for a flexible fighting force.

Historic Film - Big Picture Army Divers School

Big Picture: Army Drivers' School - National Archives and Records Administration - ARC Identifier 2569634 / Local Identifier 111-TV-365 - DVD Copied by Katie Filbert. Soldiers with an unusual occupation shown on "THE BIG Picture" -- THE BIG PICTURE has come up with a neat little documentary in "Army Divers' School," filmed on location at Fort Eustis, Virginia.

Director of Photography is SP-3 Gerald Finnerman of the Army Pictorial Center in Long Island City, and experienced and qualified cameraman from Warner Brothers Studio in Hollywood. Through his eyes and the lens of THE BIG PICTURE camera, TV viewers will follow the training and actual underwater operations assigned to enlisted divers of the Army Transportation Corps.

The diving student learns and becomes a jack-of-all-trades: welder, carpenter, mechanic all rolled into one. He must also be an explosives expert; at home with such items as blasting machines, plastic explosives gelatin dynamite and TNT. Playing down the dramatics usually seen in underwater work, the skillful photography by Finnerman results in a documentary featuring generous use of all camera angles.

It takes 17 weeks in the Divers' School for young soldiers who had never been under the water to become qualified salvage divers and fledgling members of one of the highest paid trades in the world.

Van Morrison - So Quiet In Here

Foghorns blowing in the night
Salt sea air in the morning breeze
Driving cars all along the coastline
This must be what it's all about
Oh this must be what it's all about
This must be what paradise is like
So quiet in here, so peaceful in here
So quiet in here, so peaceful in here
The warm look of radiance on your face
And your heart beating close to mine
And the evening fading in the candle glow
This must be what it's all about
Oh this must be what it's all about
This must be what paradise is like
So quiet in here. so peaceful in here
So quiet in here, yeah, so peaceful in here
All my struggling in the world
And so many dreams that don't come true
Step back, put it all away
It don't matter, it don't matter anymore
Oh this must be what paradise is like
This must be what paradise is like
It's so quiet in here, so peaceful in here
It's so quiet in here, so peaceful in here
A glass of wine with some friends
Talking into the wee hours of the dawn
Sit back and relax your mind
This must be, this must be, what it's all about
This must be what paradise is like
Oh this must be what paradise is like
So quiet in here, so peaceful in here
So quiet in here, so peaceful in here
Big ships out in the night
And we're floating across the waves
Sailing for some other shore
Where we can be what we wanna be
Oh this must be what paradise is like
This must be what paradise is like
Baby it's so quiet in here, so peaceful in here
So quiet in here, so peaceful in here
So quiet in here, so peaceful in here
So quiet in here, you can hear, it's so quiet

RIP Miss Celeste Holm

Oscar-winning actress Celeste Holm died at her home in New York on Sunday at the age of 95, her niece, Amy Phillips, confirmed.

Holm, a star of the Broadway stage and movies, was admitted to New York's Roosevelt Hospital a week ago, but her husband took her home to her Manhattan home on Friday, Phillips said.

"She passed peacefully in her home in her own bed with her husband and friends and family nearby," she said.

Holm won the best supporting actress Academy Award for "Gentleman's Agreement" in 1947. She was nominated for the same honor in 1949 for "Come to the Stable" and 1950 for "All about Eve," according to the Academy database.

Holm's stage career began in 1936 in a Deer Lake, Pennsylvania, stock company, which led to an understudy role in a touring production of "Hamlet" with Leslie Howard, according to her official biography.

Her Broadway debut in "The Time of Your Life" in 1939 was a small part, but it brought her to the attention of New York critics. Four years later, she was cast as Ado Annie in the smash "Oklahoma!" because of her ability to "sing bad," the biography said.

She signed a long-term contract with 20th Century Fox that began her film career in 1945, after she toured Europe entertaining troops with the USO. Her first Fox movie was "Three Little Girls in Blue" in 1946, a supporting role that earned her star billing for the musical "Carnival in Costa Rica" in 1947.

Holm's stardom took off in her third film, "Gentleman's Agreement," in which she won the best supporting actress Academy Award for playing fashion editor Anne Dettry.

Her official biography said she was challenged in "finding parts appropriate for this intelligent blonde who didn't fit their Betty Grable 'pin-up girl' mold." In 1949, however, she was cast as a "tennis-playing French nun in "Come to the Stable," which earned her another best supporting actress Oscar nomination, it said.

Fox briefly suspended her in 1950 "for refusing other roles she felt were beneath her." But she was brought back that same year to play the role of Karen Richards in "All About Eve." She was again nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar.

She shocked Hollywood by buying out her Fox contract after "All About Eve" to return to Broadway, despite her rising big screen stardom. Once back in New York, Holm also began a long career acting in television.

Her TV resume includes dozens of series, starting as a guest actress with "All Star Revue" in 1950 and concluding with an episode of "Whoopi" in 2004. In between, she had her own short-lived series "Honestly, Celeste!" in 1954. She is also remembered as the Fairy Godmother in Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella," a 1965 television series.

She played Hattie Greene in both the "Touched by an Angel" and "Promised Land" TV series in the 1990s.
The last decade of her life was overshadowed by a bitter legal dispute between one of her two sons and Holm's fifth husband, Frank Basile. She married Basile, who was 46 years younger than her, in 2004.
Neither of her two sons was there in her Central Park West apartment when she died, Phillips said.
She first married director Ralph Nelson in 1938, but the couple divorced the next year after the birth of a son, Ted, according to her official biography.

Her second marriage, to English auditor Francis Davies, in 1940 also ended quickly, the biography said.
Holm married airline public relations executive A. Schuyler Dunning in 1946. Her second son, Daniel, was born that year, but that marriage did not last, it said.
