The Swallows - It Ain't The Meat (It's The Motion)
This Baltimore-based vocal group called themselves The Swallows in deference to their mentors, The Orioles, who also hailed from the Baltimore area. "It Ain't The Meat" is a prime example of the type recording that was nearly impossible to get played on any mainstream radio station in the early 1950's.
Released in 1951, it climbed the R&B charts quickly and became quite a jukebox hit on the Southern coast. The Swallows soon toured with the Count Basie Orchestra as a result of their hits like this on the King label. The song was covered by Charlotte, NC's Poor Souls in the 1980's with a slight lyrical change to "It Ain't The Beat", but the songs were the same.
